January 4 - The Mojón con Cara

The Mojón con Cara

Several weeks ago, I wrote a blog on the Bolivian legend of the Mojón con Cara.  There is a carved mojón, best described as a hitching post or a boundary marker, on Calle Republiquetas and Calle Rene Moreno.  This has always been one of my favorite stories, a legend that speaks to me of the culture of Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

The legend is a love story of a girl and boy who were of different backgrounds, yet they found love, despite the obstacles of social class.

Coming to Bolivia this year, I have reacquainted myself with Bolivian friends of long ago, like Carlos, Sandra, Jimena, Carmen, and Debbie.  I have also made new Bolivian friends, such as Fernando, Mariela, José, Ninoska, Martha, Rebecca, Matildé, and Anna.  They learned early on that I was writing a blog about my experiences in Bolivia.  And they discovered that I love Bolivia, often thanking me for writing about their country with such love.  I do love this country.  I will never be Bolivian, but Bolivia will always be in my heart.

So one day, I was thinking, a dangerous thing to do, and decided I wanted to do a short novel that expresses my love for Bolivia.  That novel, which I am pleased to announce is complete, is based on the legend of the Mojón con Cara.  It is now for sale on Amazon in both paperback and e-book formats.  If you are in the area, and you want me to sign it, I will be more than happy to accommodate you.

My dear friend, Mariela, helped me a lot. Several times she gave me the key to her house in Samaipata and told me to go write, relax and be inspired.  She gave me ideas on names that would sound as if they came from Santa Cruz, not just a common Spanish name.  And she took the time to edit my novel, suggesting things that would create a more Bolivian feel to it.

This is a short novel, but I am proud of it.  You should be able to read the entire novel in a single sitting.
