February 16, 2017 - The Modern Art of Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz Modern Art

I wrote this blog early in my time back in Santa Cruz, I think in September.  Art has always been something I have loved and even considered studying it in college.  Considering this is modern art, I doubt this blog will be well read.  That’s too bad, since art is one of the most definitive expressions of a culture, and modern art speaks to the current culture of a place.

Dallas has some pretty cool art museums, like the Nasher Sculpture Center, and across the county line in Fort Worth there is the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art.  Both of those are large permanent exhibits in very interesting architectural settings.  I don’t get to Forth Worth as often as Dallas, but I try to make it to the Nasher as often as possible, to see my old favorites, and new exhibitions.

Santa Cruz does not quite reach the level of sophistication of those museums, but that does not mean they are neglecting the arts.  It seems that Santa Cruz has a very interesting modern art scene.

I have already told you about the Manzana 1.  I think they change their exhibition about once every other month.  Today they had an artist that seemed to have a preoccupation with death.  Note the rows of rainbow colored coffins.

The Casa de Cultura, House of Culture, usually presents plays, but also has art exhibitions.  Both of these art galleries are free and rarely crowded.  It is interesting to see how the young artists of Santa Cruz see the world.

I am posting this on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, after being home since Thursday the 16th.  I have twice been to Manzana 1, including tonight.  They have a cool exhibit of Carnival costumes; appropriate since Carnival is this weekend.  I will catch up on my blogs and try to be more efficient in getting them posted.

I still am hoping some of you will buy my novels and give me a recommendation on Amazon.  The recommendations help to sell the book when people stumble across it.   And when I am in your area, I will gladly sell it.

Link to my author page on Amazon. You can buy all three of my novels from here.
