My Twelfth Grade Class
My 12th graders are probably my toughest
group. Partly because they are so
smart. Partly because they finish
everything I give them so quickly. And
partly because they are 12th graders.
They don’t give me any problems; that is not why I say
tough. They come in and greet me,
sometimes even with a handshake. They
willingly do everything I ask and never complain. So why do I say they are tough?
It’s because of me. I
don’t yet feel like I am reaching them.
I don’t feel like I am challenging them.
They are my first period class and I start the day with devotions. I don’t see any response in the devotions
either. So as of this moment, I don’t
feel like I am doing what I should do as a teacher.
My 9th graders come in to my class, smile, and do
whatever I ask. My 10th
graders come into my class and I have to be careful, as if I just encountered a
Bolivian jaguar that isn’t hungry, but might attack if I’m not careful. Both of these classes have a lot of
educational growing to do. My 12th
graders are, for the most part, ready for university.
So honestly, I feel I need prayer for how to handle these
guys. I would hate to have them graduate
in May and all I did was keep them occupied for an hour each day.
The subject I am teaching them is also not one of my
favorite, British Literature. I like
some of the things we will be reading, especially Shakespeare. I have Shakespeare in all of my classes. I changed the play from Macbeth to Hamlet,
which is one of my two favorite. But
that is around Christmas time.
I am going to do a lot of writing with them. They are going to college soon and need to be
prepared to write. Already, they have
given me some interesting essays.
A really awesome group of kids. They need a good teacher too.
