Trompillo Park
Near my house is the Alameda de Trompillo, a park that stretches several
blocks along the Avenida el Trompillo, which is part of the busy Second
Ring. I have been there maybe three or
four times. It is not far from my house,
in fact, about 6 blocks away. To get
there I have to walk across the busy Second Ring, so I tend to go to the
quieter places in my immediate neighborhood.
The Trompillo Airport is just on the other side of the
park. From the park, you can see many of
the hangers of private airplanes. The
Trompillo is the Air Force’s airport.
There is one airline that flies out of it, but I see maybe one flight
leaving and one flight arriving every day.
Lots of small private planes though, and sometimes military jets.
Being that it is a military airport, the park is dedicated
to the military. Most parks in Santa
Cruz have a statue of an important man, but not the Trompillo.
When entering from the Santos Dumont end of the park, the
first thing you encounter is a helicopter.
The windows have been broken out and replaced with what looks like
painted cardboard, but it is a helicopter.
There is no sign explaining why it is there, but still it is cool.
There is a long avenue about four blocks long, lined with bougainvilleas
and palms. There are three fountains
along that walk, but I’ve never seen them activated. In the middle it is lined with around three
dozen flag poles, all displaying the green and white flag of Santa Cruz. They are as patriotic for their state here in
Santa Cruz as any Texan.
Toward the opposite end, approaching Avenida Argentina is
tank and a small fighter jet. Every time
I have been there, children were climbing all over the tank. Little boys everywhere dream of being a
soldier.
Walk another block and you come to the Madre India, one of
my favorite statues in Santa Cruz.
It is just another park, one of the many beautiful parks across Santa Cruz.
